Pretty sure that Pointe du Hoc had 75% rate of casualties (I am just remembering this number on top of my head, correct me if I am wrong), and your great grandfather really seems to be fortunate. The Rangers gave great service to the Allies by destroying the German cannons that were pointed at Omaha and Utah, which were landings that were costly, but successful, thanks to the Rangers. Rangers also captured and defended Pointe du Hoc from German reinforcement’s counterattacks, with the battle end a day later than the other beaches along the coast.
