Minecraft who plays it?

waiting until the big update sounds like a good plan, Froe. i don’t really know where to start so your help would be greatly appreciated. i suppose there’s no harm in having a couple of servers, one for PvP and another for non-PvP. i know Minecraft is heavy on RAM usage but do you know how demanding it is specifically per slot for the kind of servers you have in mind?

A server for PvP and one without is a good idea, but what’s great about Minecraft and it’s mods are you can have both in the same server!
It’s something like 16 people per 1gig of ram, not quiet sure though.

Look at http://www.minecraftforum.net/forum/131-minecraft-server-hosting/ to know more about server hosting.

Now, would the servers be whitelisted or public?

I think a whitelisted server is better because there will be too much griefers to deal with. We should make people come to aloha.pk to register in order to play. If we make it public, there is a mod called BigBrother that will revert any griefing.

If it is 1 gig for 16 people I could host a 128 person server. But I don’t think it it 1 gig=16 people.

Whitelist would be preferable, it would minimize griefers and get more people on our website.

It’s roughly that, could be less people per 1gig now though, it was like beta 1.8 when I last ran my server.

It tells you how much people exactly your rig can handle.

we could probably run a couple 50 slot servers then. would definitely need to get more ram added to the server to do more than that though.

since building and pvp can be on the same server, why not do that and have one whitelisted server for people we trust and one public server for “anything goes” chaos? i’m a big fan of freedom so the latter sounds fun to me, with at least some (BigBrother?) protection of course.

I’d definitely get back into SMP with an Aloha Server up and running. I didn’t play on the PvP servers, but Minecraft with you guys sounds fun!

Just an idea, but could the progress of the server be documented in videos?

I personally cant run a recorder on my comp though.

Yeah I’ve been out of MC for a while now, but an Aloha server would be cool.

2 servers is a good idea, a chaos one sounds good. That one can have some RPG elements, and then the whitelisted one can have zone plugins, which let you select if PvP is on/off in select areas (Or vice versa)

There are literally endless amounts of customization with Mc right now.

Wait, “I do”, “Yes”; “I don’t”, “No”…
O.o

Thats for people who want to give a more complex answer Reki, lol

I dont have a server, but BigBrother just basically makes a bunch of restore points in case some griefer destroys say like a castle or major structure. The mod allows an admin to revert changes to an earlier period of time or remove certain types of blocks.

There will be a very large update to Minecraft soon, (in a few weeks-months) which will change how a lot of the game works.
Ah, that sounds interesting..

I played minecraft for a long time, mostly creative by building some insane structures until the server I was on became too much drama.
At this point I don’t know if I’ll play again, but an interesting change in the game could be a trigger.

Like previously stated a tekkit server would be best.

Does everyone know what a tekkit server is?

I’ve heard of Tekkit, but I don’t know much about it

Please explain it.

It is a compilation of mods all put into one playable form.

these are some major mods it carries

  • IndustrialCraft
  • Computer Craft
  • Railcraft
  • RedPower
  • BuildCraft
This mod pack also offers hundreds more weapons, armour, items and block choices than are in the vanilla Minecraft.
you might think this would all be complicated and unfun but it is actually very fun. You only need to use the mods you want, the rest are there in the game but you don’t even have to touch them if you do not want to.
