What most people think of when they hear the term “hacker”

The word “hacker” does not bring the best of thoughts to most people’s minds. The popular definition of a hacker is someone who intentionally breaks into systems or networks to illegally procure information or infuse chaos into a network for the express purpose of control. Hackers are not usually associated with doing good deeds; in fact, the term “hacker” is often synonymous with “criminal” to the public. These are black-hat hackers or crackers, the folks we hear about on the news creating chaos and pulling down systems. They maliciously enter secure networks and exploit flaws for their own personal (and usually malicious) gratification.

There are different kinds of hackers

However, in the hacker community, there are subtle class differences that the general public is not aware of. There are hackers who break into systems that don’t necessarily destroy them, who have the public’s best interest at heart. These people are white-hackers, or “good hackers.” White-hat hackers are those individuals who break into systems to point out security flaws or bring attention to a cause. Their intentions are not necessarily to wreak havoc, but to do a public service.

Hacking as a public service

White-hat hackers are also known as ethical hackers; they are hackers who are working from the inside of a company, with the company’s full knowledge and permission, who hack into the company’s networks to find flaws and present their reports to the company. Most white-hat hackers are employed by actual computer security agencies, such as Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC). As stated on their site, “more than 1,000 CSC information security experts, including 40 full-time “ethical hackers,” support clients in Europe, North America, Australia, Africa and Asia. Services include consulting, architecture and integration, evaluation and assessment, deployment and operations, and training. The deployment of ethical hackers to test the vulnerability of computer networks is one of the many ways CSC can help clients deal with ongoing security threats.” These cyber security experts look for flaws in the system, and repair them before the bad guys can exploit them.

Although white-hat hackers are not necessarily recognized as much as they should be, more and more companies are looking for people who can stay ahead of the individuals determined to bring their systems down. By hiring white-hat hackers, companies have a fighting chance. Even though these programming gurus were once considered outcasts in the public eye, many hackers now hold critical and extremely high-paying jobs with corporations, governments, and other organizations. Of course, not all security breaches can be prevented, but if companies hire people who are able to spot them before they become critical, then half the battle is already won. White-hat hackers have their jobs cut out for them, because black-hat hackers are not going to stop doing what they are doing. The thrill of penetrating systems and bringing down networks is just too much fun, and of course, the intellectual stimulation is unmatched. These are very smart people who have no moral qualms about seeking out and destroying computer infrastructures. Most companies that manufacture anything to do with computers recognize this,and are taking appropriate security measures to prevent hacks, leaks, or other security mishaps.

Examples of famous hackers

Black Hat

Anonymous: A loosely associated group of hackers from all over the world, with meeting points on various online message boards and social networking forums. They are most known for their efforts to encourage civil disobedience and/or unrest through defamation and defacement of various websites, denial of service attacks, and the online publishing of personal information.

Jonathan James: Infamous for hacking into the Defense Threat Reduction Agency and stealing software code.

Adrian Lamo: Known for infiltrating several high-level organizations’ networks, including Yahoo, the New York Times, and Microsoft to exploit security flaws.

Kevin Mitnick: Convicted for multiple criminal computer crimes after evading authorities on an extremely well-publicized chase for two and a half years. After serving time in federal prison for his actions, Mitnick founded a cyber security firm to help businesses and organizations keep their networks safe.

Grey Hats

To make things even more confusing, there are some who fall under the “grey hat” category. These people usually carry good intentions (often aiming for better security), and are willing to commit crimes to achieve their goals. Whether these people should be supported is a decision for each person by being either pro-security or pro-law.

White Hat

Tim Berners-Lee: Best known for inventing the World Wide Web, HTML, and the URL system.

Vinton Cerf: Known as the “father of the Internet”, Cerf has been highly instrumental in creating the Internet and the Web as we use it today.

Dan Kaminsky: Highly respected security expert best known for his role in uncovering the Sony BMG copy protection rootkit scandal.

Ken Thompson: Co-created UNIX, an operating system, and the C programming language.

Donald Knuth: One of the most influential people in the field of computer programming and theoretical computer science.

Larry Wall: Creator of PERL, a high level programming language that can be used for a wide variety of tasks.

the kind of cheating or “hacking” you’re defending is anything but white-hat in the gaming world. cheating in games ruins the experience for everyone, including yourself, especially those who want to appreciate legit gameplay. that’s dishonorable. you cheated before and you cheated again. the honesty in your appeals will be remembered but we just can’t trust you anymore.

Actually, anonymous isn’t any hat. We don’t condone black hat acts, and instead encourage white and grey hat activities. Our civil unrest is usually against corrupt dictators, terrorist organizations, etc… There’s really just have a common understanding, no real organization.
Some members do use anonymous as a front for black-hat activities though… :frowning:

In a stunning move that has civil libertarians stuttering with disbelief, the U.S. Senate has just passed a bill that effectively ends the Bill of Rights in America.

The National Defense Authorization Act is being called the most traitorous act ever witnessed in the Senate, and the language of the bill is cleverly designed to make you think it doesn’t apply to Americans, but toward the end of the bill, it essentially says it can apply to Americans "if we want it to.

This bill, passed late last night in a 93-7 vote, declares the entire USA to be a “battleground” upon which U.S. military forces can operate with impunity, overriding Posse Comitatus and granting the military the unchecked power to arrest, detain, interrogate and even assassinate U.S. citizens with impunity.

Even WIRED magazine was outraged at this bill, reporting:

Senate Wants the Military to Lock You Up Without Trial

…the detention mandate to use indefinite military detention in terrorism cases isn’t limited to foreigners. It’s confusing, because two different sections of the bill seem to contradict each other, but in the judgment of the University of Texas’ Robert Chesney — a nonpartisan authority on military detention — “U.S. citizens are included in the grant of detention authority.”

The passage of this law is nothing less than an outright declaration of WAR against the American People by the military-connected power elite. If this is signed into law, it will shred the remaining tenants of the Bill of Rights and unleash upon America a total military dictatorship, complete with secret arrests, secret prisons, unlawful interrogations, indefinite detainment without ever being charged with a crime, the torture of Americans and even the “legitimate assassination” of U.S. citizens right here on American soil!

If you have not yet woken up to the reality of the police state we’ve been warning you about, I hope you realize we are fast running out of time. Once this becomes law, you have no rights whatsoever in America. — no due process, no First Amendment speech rights, no right to remain silent, nothing.

The US senate does not want us to speak. I suspect even now orders are being shouted into telephones and men with guns will soon be on their way. Why? The United States Government is seeking to end the constitution; this will endanger thee American people and we will not stand by and watch while this government of deception prepares to rip away from us all of the freedoms that our forefathers granted us, the freedoms that were fought for, bled for, that our ancestors died for. By what means do the People exercise their authority over the Government? That depends on how resistant the Government is to complying with the Will of the People. In the case of the Declaration of Independence, it meant declaring war on the Government and overthrowing them. This is obviously a last resort after taking other steps less harsh. Have we not tried? It is clearly the Right and the Duty of the American people to overthrow the Government in order to restore the United States as a government to serve the People. This is clearly established in historical precedent. This is that time. We have exhausted every other option. Our government has ignored us.

The appropriate term for a player cheating in AoS is not “hacker”, but “script kiddie”. I have yet to see a case of hacking going on here.

And, rage-hunt, you should credit the source of your material. We’re all very glad you know how to copy/paste, though.

What’s funny is that kid who cracked a security exploit in his universities system. He reported what he found and then got kicked out of the school and really fucked over.

So much for white-hat hacking eh.

And as others have said… “hacking” in this game isn’t really relative to the types of “hacking” the OP is discussing, people running hack scripts aren’t trying to take down the master servers (though this one could happen inadvertently), or steal our identities or credit cards… They are simply running scripts which are frowned upon by the collective community. And the people who hack know they are not acceptable, but choose to do it anyway.

No one who runs these “hack” scripts is a white hat trying to make a point that the game is hackable to better the community as a whole. They are doing it for an unfair advantage over their fellow players and to make themselves look more talented than they actually are or to cause social unrest on a server.

Any hacking currently done in ace of spades is strictly black hat “hacking”, and not acceptable. I like to think people use the term “hacking” less as the techie definition of "“a microcomputer user who attempts to gain unauthorized access to proprietary computer systems.” and more as the slang definition (as it’s more appropriate and slightly comical):

“a person who engages in an activity without talent or skill”

Because lets face it… If you need to hack to get kills in any multiplayer videogame… You probably aren’t very talented or skilled at it to begin with. And you are only wasting the time of fellow community members who have to actively moderate your bad decisions.
