The rainbow stair was much too far from the platform, red team almost cut the front will well executed digging.
Not pretty, but it was much repaired.

I’m still waiting for something that’s not just a stairway. I remember back then when the towers weren’t just stairs and some are even actual forts. I’d like to see that more often.

Yep… but its actually difficult to get a fort working, because :

you do a fort at first, and the opposite team will certainly make a thin tower and win
or you do a nice tower , and transform it into a fort then, but your teammate will keep capping the intel and the round will end before you finished your fort.

The way to avoid this would be to set the win when the team cap 20 intels (instead of 10) or shorten the distance between the two building areas (so fort would be interesting since it protects you and let you snipe ennemies).

So, yes, mmmh, we are seldom building aesthetic things since there are few builders (well, it depends), sometimes they are fucking everything (2blocks stairs, pilaring or even blocking entrances…) and wont respect your color/building scheme

Stairs form a straight way from the tent to the platform. So they make capping the Intel rather fast: just go forward (and even faster with scaffoldings).
The more your tower is cut low, the more time you loose. Stairs have a large footprint on the ground so it’s easier to cut them at the top, where the loss is less important.
Stairs resist griefing quite well and can happen without a trusted user to clean-up shit griefers do. Gabrui has shown you can build efficient and fast towers that win but if you are not trusted you can’t do these designs, they will get blocked by griefers and misclicks.
Stairs are trivial to understand and execute. If people have to make lots of jumps and turns to be able to contribute, they are not going to help you build.
The protected area is rectangular itself. If you step out of the protected area, your build won’t last much.

I agree they are kinda boring, but I think these are the reasons we see them so much.

A wide front face of a tower is enemy cover, nothing else. It’s almost as bad as a three block high wall in front of the tower. you get a much better design if you build the fort on a platform five blocks above the ground. Then you can see the enemy attacking.

I any case, the stair need at least a strong front pillar right at the end of the “sky” to be withstand against destruction. Long bridges suck. Scaffoldings are easy to break in a invisible way.
They are just a false security.

What also really sucks is when someone decides to “improve” on your staircase by adding a rearfacing wall. The only thing they achieve is to create perfect cover for any enemy players that enter the staircase (from top or bottom) and cut it in the middle.
