When you have the responsibility of trying to balance a dying community with a shit IP ban system with Aloha’s benevolent culture, you can judge. Until then, you armchair commandos can fuck off.
We work hard to keep our servers clean and will continue to do so. We believe this problem has been solved; in that it’s highly unlikely he’ll be hacking on our servers again. And if it isn’t, we’ll just ban again.
We’re not here to punish people, we’re here to rehabilitate. The threat of hacking again is the only thing we care about.
I specifically specified not to get all emotional… I’m not an armchair commando, I’m just a fellow player that was concerned with “manically laughing” hackers getting unbanned without being even the slightest bit apologetic by cooking up a story about how they are bettering the community by hacking.
My goal 8x was not to get admins angry, but sometimes you need to specifically craft what you say to trigger the pathos just enough to actually get someone to do something.
Also, thank you BR for clearing up the IP misinterpretation I had. And I wasn’t sure what ML was lol, so that’s why I put (military?) I didn’t assume that that was what it stood for.
What I want to know is if this guy’s “testing” is considered hacking to everyone else here. If it is why was he apologized to and unbanned? If it isn’t then all the hackers can just start “working” on “AI” for the “betterment” of the community. That’s what everyone was concerned about. “Why was this hacker given special treatment and unbanned, just because he can post generic code snippets and use code lingo”, not that we doubt in how good the admins are or that we’re under-appreciating the time and work you put in.
I feel I should voice my opinion on why I felt I should make the call to unban him. Personally I felt that he for starters admitted he was hacking on the ban appeal and since he admitted he was hacking and showed his skill in coding which then leads me to know that the program/A.I whatever he made is legit based on his knowledge of how the game works.
Yes, his testing is hacking. He said he was hacking, he said he will stop, and I think beneath the creative writing he agrees that it wasn’t the right thing to do.
He posted a generic code snippet because that was exactly what I asked him to post. He didn’t want to (or couldn’t) release the entire thing. I asked for a generic bit just to see if he could actually code. Further, he is either someone who picks codebases up quickly, or someone who’s actually programmed something with it already (be it hack or detector).
From here on out we’ll just let time run it’s course. I’ll still watch him.
If he hacks again, he’s out for good. If this is the case, I’m sorry for recommending that a hacker be let back on the servers, it was the wrong decision and I have failed my job. Oops.
If he doesn’t, nothing’s wrong. We’ve got another player on the servers, the rules are being followed.
If on the off chance he makes a script that solves the hacking problem, or at least cuts it down slightly, we’re better off for it, will probably have gained a valuable community member, and your posts will look very silly.
I would rather not have any more hostile posts here. I am only staying involved because I want to defuse the fight. Attacks on staff decisions make me sad, staff attacks on players make me sad, out-of-game attacks in general are bad. We try to make the best decisions given the information available to us, there was no special treatment, I had never heard of him before this appeal and I honestly don’t think I’ll see him hacking again. It’s the same shot we have to call for everybody who ends up here.
I don’t really care if I look silly if it means standing up for what is right lol. And the lack of a straight out apology under the creative writing I guess is what I was concerned about, but it’s over now.
That’s just it, you don’t know what’s right. You have this self-righteous, holier-than-thou attitude and think somehow that you know better on how to manage our community than we do. To top it off, you were rude in that you had the audacity to come into an appeal that’s not yours and shout off your ignorant nonsense, all the while asking for a “non emotional” argument as you shit all over the staff.
Do you really think what you did is right? “zomg, ban this guy for breaking rules as i break them”.
I don’t care what the answer is, just follow the rules or find yourself more restricted in the same manner you so hypocritically desire of everyone else.
Guys case was closed no need to post anymore (you torch). Torch currently this appeal was not your appeal hense you have no say whatsoever. Second while we value our player’s opinions (we really do) there’s a line that has to be drawn between knowing where to listen and where to not listen. Keep in mind that if we listened to player opinions we would have not had turn arounds like Ferrari. So please leave the appeals and banning to us and if you do not know anything about code this was heavily debated in the irc. Each admin has his own personal opinions as to what their looking in an appeal to warrant unban, for me its straight truth no bs. The admin’s opinion doesn’t have to fit YOUR opinion and if I posted the irc convo you would understand.I’m not trying to flame or rage I’m just stating a fact. So its probably been mentioned somewhere in here (to lazy to read) please don’t post or try to argue against the admins decision unless you have EVIDENCE.
Perhaps there is a way to somehow duplicate appeals when they are posted and have one that players can post evidence, contributions, & opinions in and one that isn’t even shown to unregistered people or people that are registered and aren’t admins? That would leave everyone happy. Newbies wouldn’t make the mistake of posting on a ban appeal they weren’t supposed to and other people wouldn’t have to see ban appeals but not say anything and admins could have their own appeal to themselves, but if they wanted insight, could go check the “everyone else” post. It would definitely prevent a lot of this drama lol. But it’s just an idea, so this doesn’t happen again with anyone.
Torch please stop posting in someone else’s ban appeal.
IMO I feel that content in appeals should only be seen by the player and the admin.
Something like this:
Normal players can see who is appealing but do not have access to the appeal.
They can see what they were banned for and if they are accepted or denied. If they have opinion they can pm the banning admin.
This is NOT the place to discuss this sort of this. This ban appeal is between the hacker and the banning admin - people are welcome to post IF and only if they have evidence for/against the hacker/admin, or something else extremely related to the ban appeal.
No, saying “I think he is guilty” does not count, nor does saying anything similar to that. Unless it will potentially change the admin’s opinion on the ban then you should stay out. This is for all admins/mods/guards, as well. Not that we have a problem with it, I am just pointing out that it is a fair rule for all members of the forums.
This is so when we archive the ban we can quickly go through it in a years time and not have to sort through garbage, among other reasons, such as causing a flame war between the banner and posters.
Locking the topic temporarily, I believe that the issue is handled and if anything more needs to be said by the person appealing I think PM will be just fine (considering it would likely be regarding his “detecting code.”)
