Mossy Oak's Marksmanship Challenge!

Introduction
Hello everyone! As some of you know, I have begun to mess around with long distance marksmanship in an attempt to break the game entertain myself. This has sparked some interest. After speaking with a few aloha admins, we have come to the conclusion that a hypothetical shot distance of 143.1 blocks (possibly 144?) is achievable. See below.

I have tried, offhandedly, to land this shot. Using the /an command on myself, I have ranged each shot I have made. This is possible with either the rifle or the smg, in any of the babel fog shades. For those of you that would like proof, look no further than this album http://imgur.com/a/TvP35

The challenge
Can you land a shot at that distance? Use the command /an on yourself to observe the distance of each shot, which player it strikes, and where it strikes them. For those of you that are uninterested in doing so, or simply cannot land such a shot, feel free to post screenshots and recordings of the farthest shot you’ve successfully made. For those of you that do manage to complete this challenge, please post proof immediately!

A little explanation on this
On flat ground, fog of war kicks in at about 128 blocks. You cannot see beyond that. However, your bullet can travel farther than that as demonstrated in my compilation of long distance shots. Admin ei8htx has proven that fog is a cone, not a sphere, not a one dimensional wall. This means that fog can be stretched so to speak. When your target is 128 blocks away and elevated to a height of 64 blocks (the height of the intel platform) this gives you an optimal shooting distance of 143 blocks.

Tips and suggestions
As you can see in my album, shooting at that distance is difficult. You will need sharp eyesight, patience, a very clean monitor, a steady hand, and a blank scope. Many of you use pixel scopes. For those of you that do not have a pixel scope and wish to succeed in this challenge: get a pixel scope. Set yourself up at the rear of your team’s base (or the enemy base if you’re feeling brave). Use the /an command to track each shot. At distances beyond 124 blocks, the target is mostly a distorted shadow in the fog. Have patience. Player chpe has suggest utilizing the gamma settings on your computer monitor to better distinguish the hazy target. I have not done that personally, but if any of you try that method please report back and let me know how it works. Learn to watch for the smallest signs of movement. A few pixels that are a shade lighter than the fog and are moving can indicate a player moving at distances upwards of 124 blocks. If any of you have any tips, please share them in this thread.

Special thanks
I would like to thank chpe, ei8htx, FerrariFlunker, thebigpink, and Nope for their contributions in this challenge. Their skills and information is what determined the hypothetical maximum distance and spurred this challenge.

Good luck to all of you!

I always use /an on myself. I can say that the fog of war makes a player hard to find, if not almost mixed with the fog in around 128 blocks. My farthest shot so far is 131 blocks away, I don’t have a screenshot but it was on a flat ground and the player was starting to mix with the fog. This is some crazy in-game science and mathematics here.

Nice challenge! I’ll be sure to give it a… shot! budum tsk

Fog is a cylinder, not a cone, but yea. This means you can stand at height 64 and shoot down at height 0 and the fog will be the same than as if you were both on flat ground.

Anyone who wants to prove this to themselves, go in the build server, log in, and /fly as high as you can to see the cylinder.

Be careful not to crash.

I might have misunderstood your explination but I dont think you can hit anything beyond 128 blocks horizontally.

New car? Nice.

nice shot kiki thanks

You can’t hit longer than 128 blocks straight, but think of it as a rectangle. One side is 64 blocks, the other is 128. If you draw a line from corner-to-corner, it’ll be longer than 128 units. Now, look at the triangle above. It’s just basic Pythagoras Theorem; “d = √a2 + √b2”, where ‘a’ and ‘b’ are the distances and ‘d’ is the total.

With a little bit of co-ordination it would be easy to get a 144 block shot. Maaaaybe 145 or even 146 (actually, maybe not lmao) if you involved jumping/crouching.

I understand that concept, OP even drew, and I wasn’t questioning that, but I was talking about this line:

You can’t see further than 128 straight, and you can’t shoot beyond that either (straight), you can see up to 143 diagonally, and you can only shoot up to 143 diagonally, Since the fog and render distance are both in a cylinder shape.

But from typing this I learned that it was a misunderstanding, I was expecting something like this instead: “On flat ground, fog of war kicks in at about 128 blocks. You cannot see beyond that. However, your bullet can travel farther than 128 blocks as demonstrated in my compilation of long distance shots.”

I have done fog battle a few times (training with my clen m8s). And a few of them were Tower vs ground fog battle, also like what this challenge is. Takes a while to build towers though…

I decided not to try this on babel as it would have been extremely annoying waiting for the other team to get to the platform and always be moving on the platform and such. SO, i cheated and found a very lonely server and built out your beautiful 128x64 lines. I placed israelleelll at world height and then re-entered the server as israelleelll1 to place myself at water height, 128 blocks away. In the end I had to use ChpE's gama trick to even see myself close to that distance. The result was a headshot 143 blocks away. Beyond this, however, I'm not entirely sure you have a hope in hell of hitting someone at that distance without disabling fog, using esp, or using aimbot. I'm not entirely sure the bullet can even surpass 143 blocks distance. I say this after spending a very long time shooting at myself with both the smg and rifle.

ban.

world height, water height, like 64 blocks high?

idk what if the target moves a little but your shot still hit? it kinda adds some blocks to it.

Well the trick is to get 143 legit.

Any takers yet? I might start putting stadium and pinpoint up more on babel lol.

i got 142 is that close enough

Words cannot accurately convey how difficult this is.

I got this on entrenchment earlier today. It wasn't too difficult on that map but on other maps it's extremely difficult. A shot at 140/141 is pretty easy but past that point the fog doesn't easily surrender its secrets.

1v1?

not bumping old thread bc i saw it linked in a place or anything

also

factually false, sorry :frowning:

I got a shot off someone on babel from straight on the ground from 124 blocks away.

But… Eddy and I tried a lot today, and MuffinTastic accompanied us and also got a shot like I did.

142 blocks, Super close…

R.I.P /an on babel

Managed to hit some guy in the arm as he was running away. Not a confirmed kill, but just a neat shot I cracked off at the last second.
