tl/dr: Used it only once to try to capture a proof of hacking, while trying not to kill anyone. I find cheats boring, since game just has no point for me. Been playing on aloha for more than a year without any incidents (nicknames: Spaten0, cumshot), and this one was kinda dumb way to get banned. Have no intentions to use any cheats going further.

Long explanation:
I used wall hack only once, the day i was banned, for a very specific purpose, while trying to not kill anyone except one person. I saw a player named topo in stats widget. Topo have been notorious among other players on aloha (which are much better than me) recently. At first i just wanted to troll him with provoking nickname (hence “topo is hacking”), while trying to kill him at least once. In the process i noticed, something strange: he was always ready for my appearance, even when i would sneak whole way from spawn to the point of engagement. I wanted to see it for myself, so i disabled depth test in betterspades source code (that would render player models even if they are behind the wall). When i rejoined, i was just trying to setup the situation, where that player would look directly at me, while i am behind the wall, which i actually have encountered, but didnt record it. When map changed i wanted to record it, so i started trying really hard to chase him and provoke him, while not killing anyone else (only if someone would prevent me from coming to him). At that time someone on discord was already notified and were spectating me, while i wasn’t really hiding. I thought that bans for that were not permanent (since I’ve seen some hackers come back after they were banned), so i said fuck it, i just need to record it. Then i was banned. After some time i realized that the ban is permanent and the rest is history.
I am gonna be honest: i am not happy about presence of quite a lot of suspicious (imo) admins/trusted users, but i usually just try not to play with them, but in this instance i thought that this player was fairly new and blatantly using cheats and abusing trusted status so that was my idea of “revealing” him.

Even though I didn’t try to use this cheat to gain advantage for my team or myself, I feel that apology is in order. So I apologize to the aloha community for violating their trust. I feel like giving vows or taking oaths doesn’t mean anything, so I am just gonna say this: if I will get unbanned and get banned rightfully for using cheats again I wont make an appeal.

its admirable that u have apologized and r honest about cheating. so ill let u off the hook for now. but i have to tell u how to deal with situations like the one u have described so u r better equiped in the future to do good if that was ur intention.

  • since u have experience with modifying betterspades how about u try this: GitHub - VierEck/BetterSpades at demo
    this will let u record all the net packets thus recording everyone’s perspective all at once without joining the spectator team. the recording can then be replayed either with IV of Spades or aos_replay
    recording someone u suspect of cheating from ur own perspective is very rarely helpful. at the time of the ban i was the only one in the spectator team. so i assume that is what u were doing.
    due to lag and many other quirks of the game, things u see that u think is suspect can be often chalked up to those unfortunate unregularities.
    to mitigate wasting what could have been potentially valid evidence due to the nature they were recorded, we have to aim for the most accurate depiction of the cheater which is to record in their perspective rather than our own.

  • by resorting to cheats, you yourself become disruptive to the game and to the other players. if u indeed recorded footage that u, i assume, planned to share with us at some point, because why were u even recording to begin with, u would have faced consequences aswell for becoming a disruptive force in the game even if u were to successfully prove the person u were targeting was cheating.
    And in the worst case scenario, u would have used cheats against someone who was actually not cheating and just so good at the game that u mistook him for a cheater not the mention the aformentioned quirks of the game that give the illusion of someone cheating. that is the case here. topo is incredibly good at the game. there r many other ppl in this community who can attest to that.
    if u want to see what i mean please have a look at the evidence i recorded for ur ban:

    watch the demo from both ur perspective and the perspective of topo. ur cheats were obvious, while there was nothing incriminating in topo’s perspective. day and night.

even though im quite certain that we do not have trusted and staff members who cheat, please just gather evidence and report them, instead of using cheats which from ur perspective would be stooping down to their level, wouldnt it?
i will ask an admin to unban u and i will notify u in this thread when u get unbanned.

Thank you for dedicating your time to this and making this decision.

I agree, that this was a poor way to handle it. I did not consider recording demo since i thought its only a feature of openspades-based clients, and spectating/recording video of betterspades will definitely suffer from lag and other issues you described. So I will take the tools you provided to use them in such situation if it arises again, thanks for that too.

Regarding using cheats for that particular purpose: again i have to agree it is not appropriate to getting down to their level. At the time and in the heat of the moment that seemed like a ok idea, but now it just feels stupid.
