Lincent,
what you so eloquently fail to understand, is that one of the reasons for the decline, is the lack of a good client.
OpenSpades (in my humble opinion) lacks the feel of the original AOS. AOS itself has too many known bugs and glitches.
A new client could start out as an as exact as possible clone of AOS (without the glitches) and grow from there.
(I believe that this is MuffinTastic’s goal)
By growing client and server together, it would be possible to plug many of the holes that hackers are using today.
Also, the 32 player cap could be removed (assuming the network could handle it), and from there on, new game elements could be introduced, thus re-vitalizing the game. As things stand now, very little innovation in gameplay is possible (game is often played close to optimum for given map and team). It was this innovative aspect that originally brought me to AOS and especially Babel.
as this point, I feel like this belongs more to my client’s thread than this one, but no matter.
I’d like to make something very clear here: I’m not making yet another 0.75 compatible client. yvt and the various OpenSpades contributors already did that. (though how well I think they accomplished that feat from a gameplay perspective is a discussion for another time)
I want to add new features to this game. the community has already gone far too long without development of any kind happening (I don’t count OpenSpades 0.1.0, and will never count OpenSpades until they get around to writing their own netcode)
as for “getting more players,” I feel adding new features will help. look at this from a new player’s perspective; why would you want to start playing a game 6 year old game which is ridden with cheaters, and (again) has had no development happening? spoiler alert, you wouldn’t. on the other hand, if you saw a free “up and coming” game that has active development and no cheaters, you’d probably want to check it out.
some stuff I’d like to add, if you’re curious:
mounted machine gun (will test and balance, obviously)
RPG (once again, will test and balance)
better netcode (maybe based on 0.76, maybe not. still, 0.75 netcode stinks)
account system (I can guarantee that this will be controversial, but it will significantly cut down on the amount of evaders, and it will help out server hosters/scripters)
feel free to debate anything on this list.
also, about that “no cheaters” part; everything on that list will require a client that is compatible. Ben Aksoy’s client isn’t on that list (for obvious reasons), and with the goal of OpenSpades in mind, alongside their development rate… I wouldn’t count on it.
just like iceball, it might start out an empty game, but it will be a cheater-free empty game let’s just hope that when it’s “done,” it doesn’t remain empty…
Torch was right about the grandmarigs, most kids who play OS use work laptops, end up having lag(fps)and calls it a shitty ripoff not knowing graphical settings and not knowing most laptops are not for gaming ffs.And calling it an unoriginal game copying minecraft and cod.
@scraphead: I wouldn’t say that making a new client necessarily is the main fundamental to getting more players. For example, iceball. VXW. AOF. Bytebit’s OpenGL client. etc. @lincent: I agree, but in your opinion, what do you think will get new players?
I can try to talk with https://www.youtube.com/user/StrumienieZRuczaju/videos?flow=grid&sort=p&view=0, he is a streamer/youtuber, got 2 channels (each 80k) only for Polish users but in the past when he made a videos about indie games people rushed the games. His third most viewed video on this channel (it is a place for old streams) is about Ace of Spades (Steam version).
He made a boom in Poland for Castle Story, DayZ, Ace of Spades, Timber and Stone, Kerbal Space Program, Robocraft, Cube World, Prison Architect, StoneHearth, Natural selection 2 etc. etc.
So we can make a boom for OpenSpades/BuildandShoot but imho the old BaS forum should be online…
We could use some better servers too, Aloha is kinda trash and the others aren’t much better, if you wanna host pm me and I’ll help with maps and scripts.
lol, @licent can i just remind you that a good portion of players are actually under the age of 18?
I would love to host a server and run my own maps (check my “Maps” topic btw) but it costs money, and whoever doesn’t work can’t get money
