Title: Take a minute to realize this about our beloved AoS
Post by: Monstarules on August 06, 2016, 10:15:53 PM HST
Okay we all think that Ace of Spades is dying, right? I actually realized something over the last few weeks. Whenever a server gets like 7-8 players and more join, it doesn't actually take away players from other servers. I've seen people I haven't seen in years pop up when pinpoint gets populated. I heard that when the goon assault server popped up, older players appeared there too. The fact isn't that Ace of Spades is slowly dying from not being updated, it's dying because there used to be more people. However there is no shortage of wiling players. I came to the realization that AoS is dying because people are afraid to populate a server. The push event has kept push going now for almost 12 hours. There is no shortage of willing participants, everyone is just not populating the server they like because they think people won't join. Sure we don't have some of the older players, but a few Skype messages, snapchats, emails or whatever could possibly bring more than a few of them back. I know for a fact a lot of inactive players can be reached fast. the problem is that nobody wants to take the effort because they think that AoS is dying. Get that mentality out of your head. I can populate pinpoint and have it have up to 20 players within an hour, usually less. People love the maps and when they get populated, the servers will fill up. I know for a fact some people don't play AoS at all because their favorite servers are never populated.

Additionally, there are at least 500 AoS players who are active. There is such a wide diversity of players that pop in and out of aloha. Honestly, if everyone just joins the server that they like, and get  some friends to help you, the servers will be populated. People like this game because it is easy to run and can give you hours of a good time.  What does kill population however does revolve around bad maps...some maps, while they do take time and effort, are annoying to some people, and have killed some servers. Unfortunately, CSMaps has fallen prey to that issue, where people just don't wanna play it because they don't like some of the maps.

So, to the users, and guests of Aloha, the next time you want to play pinpoint, or on the blockpower server, just join the server with a few friends.
Just a thought.

I like that, Monsta. Hats off to you. People need to get the grasp that aos isn't 'dying'. The population of aos isn't even dipping.

Well what I mean by "there are less people playing" I mean less people are playing because too many people just don't join a server because it's not filling with people. We still have at least 500+ active players though (I would go as far as saying maybe even 1000+ active players). As for the people I personally have seen in the last month, who may be considered "dead":

Afrodude
CobaltAK
Spring
Eimis
Tin
[O.o] Wayne
CRoquer
Bobyman

That's who I have seen personally. I've heard several older and "dead" players have made appearances in events such as the goon assault one by Kuunikal, and the pinpoint one by Aloha. A lot of AoS players just don't visit the Aloha forums, they visit the Acorn server list or BnS. When they see that their server has players, BANG, they join. I am almost positive everyone with 0.75 AoS browses through the servers at least 2 times a week

And thank you, Glass, you're too kind

Trust me I feel the same way. People get mad when I don't play nice though and I'll kill myself before I go out of my way to make fun of people in AoS.

p.s. will do.

I can only speak for myself but I come back around for like a month every summer and as soon as the school year starts back up I'll probably "die" again, and I imagine this is the same for other people that you mentioned. Just because people are bored doesn't mean that they're willing to invest time playing a dead (yes it is dead) game.

Some of the stuff you said is true, but people also join populated servers because of the wait time. When someone wants fast passed action, who wants to wait for a bunch of players to join? Also, I don't know how posting OpenSpades and classic AoS on steam greenlight would work out because of copyright crap and stuff, but it would help the community gain a lot of new players.

Humans vs Zombies is dead and Spade Wars is dead. The only populated arena server is ArenaCS.

AoS is dead for me.

True, alongside with Blockpower and all other servers aside from Top 10/All Maps and Assault.

I don't understand why they are giving away the copyrights yet, they're just wasting money on hosting servers for 0 players for most of the time

Why give it away when they can possibly sell it? Even if it won't be sold for a lot, I don't see why Jagex would give it away for free when they can sell it for some quick bucks to at least cover the overhead costs from running the game.

Even if that's the reason, why aren't they selling it? (Correct me if I'm wrong but afaik, JAGEX doesn't want to sell the copyrights).

Even if it was to be sold, the game is too butchered to go back to what the original intentions were, unless someone who played the old AoS is now rolling in money.
Title: Re: Take a minute to realize this about our beloved AoS
Post by: GuardiaN on August 11, 2016, 04:30:48 PM HST
I'm sorry but mind if I ask what the old intentions for AoS's future were? I've seen people commenting across steam and on certain YouTube videos saying that "Openspades is how Aos was said to be made, not like the 1.0 steam version."

Nowadays people are leaving the community not because of the repetitive-ness(?) of this game but rather the amount of hackers playing, if we can gain the copyright, we can publish a new Voxlap version which actually fixes a ton of bugs/glitches and also alters a bit of the code which will make these dll hacks useless.

Okay so after reading all this, the first question that comes to your mind is "what will you do about the past Voxlap clients which can enter the server?" Ans. We can add a command into the new updated client and when that client will connect to a server, the server itself will look if that "ticket" is present, if it is, connected, if it isn't, kicked.
Atleast this way, we will be reducing a large number of hackers who use the Voxlap client. And hopefully we will start promoting this game IF people stop talking about how this game is dead and there is 0 fucking hope on making it revive again.

The reason people are leaving is because the game isn't being updated/supported. The original intentions from what I recall, were for the client to be moved to OpenGL, add a deployable machine gun, RPG, and a GUI.

The fact is that I doubt anybody, especially mat^2, will be motivated to come back to this game as there won't be any profit in it anymore, not after Jagex soiled their take on the game. I'm sure Ben has moved on to better projects or just cashed his check and moved on with life too. It would be a nice dream to have the game go back to what it was, but it's better to think realistically.

Fair enough, I have a copy of his open-gl game still on my onedrive :D If Openspades wasn't taken down due to copyright then shouldn't we spread his OpenGL version without having to worry about copyright

First I've seen this, I missed the original IRC conversation about it last year by a few hours. Got it mostly reversed, will probably try to make a server for it later. Some people last year were trying, I'll see how far they got.
